Volunteer of the Month is…….Jennifer Simotics

Each month our River Eves’ parents spend hundreds of collective hours volunteering at school and from home to plan and implement the PTA’s programs and events. Because our volunteers are so integral to our students and our school, we want to recognize one superstar volunteer each month.

The Volunteer of the Month is…

Jennifer Simotics

Jennifer is such an asset to River Eves. Her giving, upbeat, and creative nature benefits every River Eves PTA program she’s involved with.

This year, she has done an amazing job as Chair of the Reflections and Hospitality programs. Her enthusiasm and the hard work she’s put into the Reflections program shows. River Eves has a very high participation rate and even had two State winners this year! And her creativity and service-minded personality shines in her role as Chair of Hospitality. The teachers and staff are treated to several festive events throughout the year.  She does all of this with a positive attitude and a smile on her face. And in addition to working a full-time job!

Last year, she sacrificed many hours (during the week and weekend) designing and painting the Eagle Mascot in the gym. In addition, she was involved in multiple other programs as well.

Since her son started kindergarten, Jennifer has given many hours of her time and talents in service to River Eves Elementary and the community, as well as being a valued member of the River Eves PTA.

PTA recently interviewed Jennifer, here’s what she had to say…

Tell us about yourself …

I grew up in Providence Rhode Island and then went to Rhode Island school of design and Boston University. I then moved to New York City where I worked in various aspects of the photography and film industry. Before I left New York my last job was working at The Syfy channel as the photo editor where I hired and produced all our publicity and marketing shoots. Once I moved to Georgia I became a creative marketing consultant working with photographers, directors, and illustrators on marketing , branding and portfolio development.

I have a nine-year-old named Austin who is in 3 rd grade and goes to River Eves and an 18-year-old named Kaitlin who is soon off to go to college.

What brought your family to River Eves Elementary?

Our community, amazing teachers and staff are what brought us to River Eves.

How did you begin volunteering at River Eves?

I started volunteering in Austin’s classroom in kindergarten as Room Mom, so I could really gain an understanding of the teachers, the school, and the community our son is growing up in.

Tell us about the various roles/committees you have volunteered for at the school?

I have helped with  Room Mom,  Stem Days, Destination Imagination, Teacher Appreciation, Hospitality, Reflections, and painted the Eagle mascot in the gymnasium . Soon my husband and I will also be updating the outdoor classroom.

Why do you volunteer your time and resources to the school?

I truly love being a part of our community . The staff and teachers at River Eves along with the amazing students are why I enjoy volunteering.

What do you like to do with your free time?

In my free time I enjoy painting, playing tennis, gardening, photography, cooking, playing with my dogs and hanging out with my family and friends. I also love to travel and immerse myself in different cultures as that brings inspiration in many areas of my life.

Taste of Holcomb Bridge

The Taste of Holcomb Bridge event will be held on Thursday, March 2nd from 6 – 8pm at Holcomb Bridge Middle School. This is a community event that is a fun time for students and their families to celebrate our diversity through sharing of foods and talent. It is a wonderful opportunity to gather and share different cultural dishes while giving students the opportunity to present their talents. We hope you will join us for this fun HBMS tradition!

If you contribute a dish (16 servings) that celebrates your culture, you can bring a family of 4 to the event for free. Or, the cost is $5.00 per person and $20.00 for a family of five to attend the Taste.

Please sign up to bring a dish that showcases your heritage:

Volunteer of the Month…is Sara Almstedt

Each month our River Eves’ parents spend hundreds of collective hours volunteering at school and from home to plan and implement the PTA’s programs and events. Because our volunteers are so integral to our students and our school, we want to recognize one superstar volunteer each month.

The January Volunteer of the Month is…

Sara Almstedt

Sara is such an asset to River Eves. Her giving, community-focused nature and education background benefits every River Eves PTA program she’s involved with.

Most recently, she has been a phenomenal Co-Chair for the Accelerated Reader program. And in addition to her duties, she willingly stepped up and took on additional responsibilities when one of her committee members was ill. All with a positive attitude and a smile on her face. Before AR, she was a regular in the Media Center and is always ready to help in any way she’s needed at all school events.

Since her daughter, Anna, started kindergarten, Sara has given hours and hours of her time in service to River Eves Elementary and the community, as well as being a valued member of the River Eves PTA.

PTA recently interviewed Sara, here’s what she had to say…

Tell us about yourself (where you are from, college, work history, kids names & ages, etc)
I grew up in Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1997. I moved to the Atlanta area right after I graduated and began teaching elementary school. I taught first grade and third grade for ten years. I met my husband, Jeff, here in Atlanta and we’ve been married for 14 years this summer. We have one daughter, Anna, who is in 4th grade. I now teach 3 year old preschool at our church, Northbrook UMC.

What brought your family to River Eves Elementary?
We moved to Roswell in 2005 in hopes of starting our family here. We live in Woodfield, love Roswell and love River Eves!

How did you begin volunteering at River Eves?
I started volunteering in the media center when Anna was in kindergarten. It was a great place for me to volunteer on a regular basis and get to know the school and some of the staff. As a teacher myself, I know how much I appreciate parent volunteers, so I wanted to do what I could to help at River Eves.

Tell us about the various roles/committees you have volunteered for at the school?
I have volunteered in the media center every year and this year I am the co-chair of Accelerated Reader with Lindsay Helms. I also try to help at other events we attend, such as Bingo Night and the Fall Festival.

Why do you volunteer your time and resources to the school?
I like to volunteer to feel a connection to the school and staff. This is where Anna spends the majority of her time, so I want to stay in touch! I have also found it is a good way to meet other families in our community.

What do you like to do with your free time?
In my free time I like to hike, read and go out for ice cream with my family.
